Malaria is caused by a parasite that is transmitted from one human to another by the bite of an infected mosquito. Travelers from malaria-free areas to disease “hot spots” are especially vulnerable to the disease. Symptoms may include high fevers, shaking chills, sweats, headaches nausea and vomiting, body aches and general malaise and death. Every year 350-500 million cases of malaria occur worldwide, and over one million people die. Although malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can usually be prevented. There is currently no vaccine against malaria. Anti-malarial medications (pills) and insect repellents protect against the disease.
